I’ve figured this out (got the information from another site after spending way too much time looking and trying different approaches). Thought I’d post it on here since this is pretty much at the top of the search results when searching for search server express and sbs2008.

All you need to do is make one small change in the registry before you install search server express, and then it will allow you to choose the advanced install and the config wizard will run through successfully.

Change “\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Web Server Extensions\12.0\WSS\ServerRole” from “SINGLESERVER” to “APPLICATION”, run the search server install, and then you can change the key back.

That’s it!

Having struggled with similar issues on SBS server installs (including one now, where I am just trying to get the basic search service running on the Company Web in SBS 2008), finding this blog and reading through it was an echo of several chapters in My Book of Life…I couldn’t rant more accurately!

Hi, sorry to hear of all your troubles… Having been through a number of SBS2008 installs myself, the best starting point is to have a read of HP’s support document describing how to install SBS on ProLiant servers… http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01479108/c01479108.pdf

With regards to the UPS problem – this is certainly unfortunate, although in my experience not particularly uncommon. To be fair to APC, their website does list which devices are compatible with which servers… and a pre-requisite for any sever deployment should really be to check for any compatibility issues with existing hardware.

Had the same thing with a UPS – was an APC Smart UPS RS – not the usual APC Smart UPS XL units we use- turns out the output is different, and the power supplies didn’t like. Client tried to save $50 by getting the cheaper UPS, ended up costing much more in downtime… sigh.

As a long time fan of SBS and having done 40 or 50 installs of SBS 4.5, 2000, and 2003, your first couple of comments forshadowed the rest of your comments. At the consulting company I used to work at, I made a long how-to checklist for SBS and I think you hit all of conditions I marked as Important! and Do this or you will regret it. The HP raid controller thing is seriously irritating. I can't understand why the even sell a raid controller that can't do a dynamic resize. The UPS thing in totally new... ouch!
